Flat File CMS

May 24th, 2009

In today’s world everything is built on speed. There seems to be only one exception and that is software, and especially the web programmes to create content. Here WordPress has gained a perfect stake. Indeed it’s a good software and this site is using WordPress as well as many other sites of us.

But in the last months we found some alternatives which – at least in some cases – can make life much quicker, more easy, more efficient and quicker with a flat file CMS, without loosing anything important.

Just to make it clear: If you really need everything just take WordPress or one of the other well-know programmes. If you do like to use the Web to publish content in a usual way – leaving aside those people for which blogging is a way to generate income – most of the other people in this area don’t need that much and there are some other options which make life easier.

“Less” is “more” – why a flat file CMS?

Lets have a look on the advantages of smaller solutions (and especially for flat file CMS which doesn´t need a database)

Installation: No need for a database and to fuzzle about access and password for it.

Better and safer backup: There is no doubt that backing up the software is much easier if you just need to back up the directory and you are done. Especially if it’s on a remote server. Technically it´s no problem but another “useless” step which is hard to perform regularly in daily life. And when the unexpected things happens and the server breaks down. Then you just have the software and not the database, which will hardly help.

Moving the website: Having everything in one folder is a big advantage if you move your website. You don’t need to put together the single pieces of files and database.

Speed: Coming to the user point. A database is good if you want to search a single file out of a million – but it’s simply too much if you just want to add 10 to 20 articles.  Database access and searches take its time for accessing the system. Usually a fat file system is much quicker.

Customization: In 99% of cases there is nothing to do or worry about the software you are using. But in some cases there is a small bug, or a word which is “wrong”. Changing /adding something could be become difficult on a large system.

Webspace : Certainly nowadays there is no problem in having enough space for a website. But this changes if you have more than one website. With around 20 MB for a simple WordPress install you need around 200 or 300 MB of space using WordPress for 10 sites. You will see later that the simple flat file CMS will use only 1 or 2 MB or even less per installation which means 10-20 MB all-in-all for 10 sites.

Some options for a flat file CMS

Therefore one should look at some alternative flat file CMS we found and liked:

Pivot: To make it briefly: Pivot is a mature system that hardly leaves a wish open especially for a Blog. A great Community (at present 75,000 contributions) helps at all problems. Though: With 5.6 MB its also no more straight “lite”, even if Pivot runs without Mysql database and stores everything as text files

SkyBlueCanvas Lightweight cms is already considerably smaller with 2.8 MB. The lesser known system also manifests itself by a little lean “optics”. But under the hood there is considerably more than at Pivot: Numerous modules like news, form managers, picture administration and more already make it a mature CMS. The individual modules may be placed in different areas on the webiste, a very useful feature for such a small software.

Pluck is similar in size to SkyBlueCanvas. The greatest share of space takes the Tinymice editor. Pluck offers considerably less modules but a nice administration panel. Simple and useful  flat file CMS for a smaller project.

RazorCMS is by far the smallest program in this group of flat file CMS. The Core is merely 200 kb in size with some additional modules (called Plugins or Blades) and a WYSIWYG editor (Nicedit) only only just over 300 kb. In comparison to the colleagues it works with lightning speed and is extremely flexible in many things. SEO links are just as availably as flexible link positioning. In our opinion a real gut choice if you need a standard website. Just to show you some examples of sites which we have done with RazorCMS and showing very different (creative minded) themes:

  • Foolcut.com - a Site about hair and showing a nice theme called “Black Puzzle”
  • Lyrics site - showing a nice “coffee theme”
  • Wara - with a very puristic theme

Certainly there are some more points to consider, for example whether you need a blog, a CMS, a Wiki or even something else. We will come back to this question soon.

Wolfram alpha and health questions: do not expect answers

May 17th, 2009

Great expectations are connected with the new intelligent search engine Wolfram Alpha which has started yesterday night. The new search concept which tries to provide answers is in the suspicion to be able to win over Google.

The start got lost a little bumpily, various technical breakdowns were pursued by some 1000 interested parties on Twitter. Now, however, it seems to run and starts with testing by many users around the world.

The first reactions seem to be positively minded, a a large number of people like Lytle and bbgm giving it a good chance.:

On the other hand the first people looking into it a bit deaper already touched the limitations, ending with mixed feelings. A number of tests by Planningpooldobeweb up to the “Where is God” challenge clearly showed that not all questions are answered.

So we have been really interested to see how it works and tried ourselves, but with a special look into health.

Standard questions work

In this area place we keep it short, as already a whole number of reviews are available.

The search for a country like Sweden immediately delivers a card and the most important numbers and facts. Of course one also could call Wikipedia. But it is more comfortable, especially if you start to compare various countries. So clearly no real problem here.

Health questions fail

But since we deal with the topic medicine and health, we tried our luck the as well.

First attempt: Acne

Acne is a skin disease which manifests primarily itself at teenagers and can overlook the face with ugly spots there. We enter the word acne once.
The machine answered fast and gives back

  • the definition,
  • word origin,
  • similar expressions
  • subsumable concepts

Trying to click on these result turns out the first real big surprise: They aren´t links and need to be manually copied in a new search. Simply annoying.

Further tests with the keywords acne patients, acne treatment and acne therapy end with the answer “Wolfram|Alpha isn’t sure what to do with your input.”

Second test: Psoriasis

The Psoriasis is also a skin disease. Psoriasis concerns millions of people. Therefore, once more, the test with the word “Psoriasis”, the machine answered similarly as before with the definition and broader related concepts.
Search for therapy, action, patients and so on ends with the result that the machine doesn’t understand as in the case of the first example at all.

Third test: Menopause

to make it briefly: the same result

4th test: hair loss

For the search a thrilling topic like “hair loss” (where a large part of the population is concerned of some type of hair loss), one would expect a bit more than “Wolfram|Alpha isn’t sure what to do with your input.”

Here now the perfect frustration: Wolfram Alpha doesn’t know “hair loss” at all. Hardly believable.

Just to summarize: You may ask – but don´t expect an answer for your health problems.

Of course Wolfram begins “alpha” with the claim to collect and compare data and facts. However, a lot of data and facts is existing in the medical area  too, e.g. Patient numbers, treatment costs, insurance cases ..

Today, with the start day one can only draw the conclusion that obviously Wolfram Alpha hasn’t approached the field of medicine yet. A bit too much for a mathematician ?? But actually perhaps also a pity.

The basic idea surely could be realized in elegant form here. Surely there are many medical information sources and it would be good to aggregate essential basic data for the user, avoiding to spent time going though a programmiertpile of links from Google.

The summarized presentation of Wolfram Alpha also would be a help in comparison with Wikipedia, which requires nowadays a lot of time and attention (and eventually a dictionary) for the normal user to understand the medical terminology used there.

At the moment we have to stick to hopes fort he future. We have to wait and see whether Wolfram will close this gap between Google and Wikipedia and will be able to enrich the area of the medicine with a novel search alternative. In any case it would desirable .

Welcome to i-Brane

May 1st, 2008

This is a website founded by Peter, but he left it. As I saw many from his good comments at the blog of Matt Cutts, so I decided to proceed.

Nothing really serious, I´m not a SEO, so more related to things a normal webmaster will experience in nowadays word. And indeed it is mandatory now not only to watch for the own site, but also what is going around. Google is a good search machine, buit as its procedure are pretty well known (although not in detail) a lot of people now just “play” successful to get their pages up, which means that everyone has to join the rat-race or gets lost. This is the situation, but nothing to worry.

Also I will publsih some of  my personal pics here and tehre, just a bit in the tradition of Matt. Some nice cats are already waiting …
